5 Tips for Homeschooling Moms to Start Prioritizing Their Health

As a homeschooling mom, you may be juggling many responsibilities making it easy to put yourself last. The result of neglecting yourself and your health results in low energy levels, burnout, and potentially health concerns overtime. Prioritizing your health doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Try one (or more) of these tips to start prioritizing your health today:

1. Wake up earlier than the kids

Waking up earlier than the kids is a great way to get some alone time before a busy day. As much as it can be tempting to hit the snooze button, the quiet morning really helps set the tone for the day. You can use this time to read, have tea, exercise, or even work on your own project/business. This will help improve your overall mental health and decrease the likelihood of experiencing burnout.

2. Keep a water bottle with you all day

There are some days where you just don’t get to the kitchen, which not only means missed meals but also not enough water. Keeping a water bottle with you will ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. It will also help decrease the consumption of sugary beverages such as juices and pops. Aim to drink the equivalent of 8-12 cups per day.

3. Have wholesome meals with the family at regular times

Moms are notorious for missing meals. Just like you ensure your children are eating at regular times, you should be scheduling your own meals too. The easiest way to go about this is to eat when your children are eating. Once you start eating regular meals, you can start paying attention to what types of foods you are putting on the plate. Aim for ¼ plate of protein, ¼ plate of carbs, and ½ plate of veggies.

4. Skip the packaged snacks

As a busy mom, it is common to grab the easiest thing to satisfy your hunger and cravings. Most of the time, the grab-n-go snacks consist of packaged items high in calories, fat, and sugar/salt. Instead, have a fruit with a handful of nuts for a good balance of protein and fibre, that will leave you feeling more energized. You can also make a batch of energy bites for the week for you and your family.

5. Take out at least 10 minutes in a day to be active

In order to benefit from physical activity, you don’t have to join the gym or dedicate a large amount of your day to exercising. Start with a 10 minute time slot on most days of the week and you will notice a boost to your energy and fitness levels.
